What: Jonah Goldberg
When: Tuesday, February 2, 2010 - 7:30pm
Where: University Center -- University of Tennessee
That stellar scholar Jonah Goldberg will be holding forth, Bertrand Russell-like, on his tome Liberal Fascism at UT this coming week. This poorly-written, poorly-researched book possessed of one of the most dishonest theses of all time has made the rounds with the hard right wing intelligentsia since its publishing and should be red meat to much of UT's student body. For a complete disemboweling by trained scholars, see these links here and here.
If you go, go and try to engage this guy positively. Yelling and screaming at him is what he wants, and, to be honest, most right-wing political movements thrive on being beaten upon by their imagined enemies. I won't be attending. I have to work on my honest, well-written, well-researched dissertation that won't be a bestseller because it contains boring things like facts and what not. :)

Demon spawn
It's worth mentioning that this dimwit's first claim to fame was as the demon spawn of Lucianne Goldberg, who betrayed the confidence of Monica Lewinsky and tried to bring down President Clinton.
"I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems scary and weird. It'll happen to you."
—Abraham Simpson
Could always offset it with a Dick Gregory show
TTU, Feb. 1 -- for once, I think we win one.
And for an embowelling:
For an embowelling: read Goldberg's response. But surely you can carve out a couple hours more than a month away from your hectic stellar, grad student schedule to attend a free lecture and ask some really killer gotcha question?
Oh, I read that. Jacques
Oh, I read that. Jacques Derrida couldn't have written a better mock response. That's the point.
OK. Back to my stellar career: Transcribing interviews with human rights victims.

Propagandist not Historian
You see... It's really a book on political theory that just so happens to violate a generation of historical work on fascism in such a way so as to absolve one side of the political spectrum of any association with authoritarianism or totalitarianism.
That's quite a response... I could go on, but what's the point. Doughy pantload is a propagandist. You can't debate madness.
No thanks. I almost got
No thanks. I almost got arrested trying to see a UT lecture by somebody I actually like. I'm too old for that.
Heh. Like I said, it will be
Heh. Like I said, it will be red meat for the UT undergrad on average. They "riot" over a coach, but meekly take a tuition increase like mice.

debunked by "trained
debunked by "trained scholars." Now that's funny
all trained at GMU?
or should you have said "indoctrinated"?
Yes. Robert Paxton was
Yes. Robert Paxton was indoctrinated at that hotbed of leftist scholarship that was Harvard's history department in the 1950s. Roger Griffin, likewise, was turned as a member of a Red Cadre at that bastion of Maoism, Oxford. Matthew Feldman studied under Robert Paxton at Oxford Brooks (bet you don't know the distinction without googling) so that goes without saying. Chip Berlet works at PRA which has the word "progressive" in its mission statement so you know they are just sharpening their knives for the big overthrow. He is most famous for thoroughly debunking all claims that there was a right-wing conspiracy behind the 9/11 and defending the Bush administration against such attacks.
As for your GMU line, I imagine you mean George Mason University which has a relatively conservative professorial makeup in the social sciences. It's an excellent school.

I went to Mason. Yeah, it's a really good school, and is indeed especially strong in the social sciences (and engineering). The economics dept. in particular is top notch, in large part due to Walter Williams* of all people, who brought in a world-class group, including two Nobel Prize winners.
*That should be a hint that it's not exactly a hotbed of commie activism.
