Kava, the natural form of an herbal product kratom, is an herbal substance from the South Pacific Island mainly mixed in drinks to relax the body.

According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, kratom comes from a Southeast Asian plant and is a stimulant when taken in low doses. When consumed in larger doses, the drug reportedly takes on sedating properties that causes a euphoria mimicking opioid effects

Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery III issued an opinion in 2017 that kratom is illegal only when it's synthetic, and lawmakers agreed to exclude natural kratom from a list of scheduled drugs so long as it was properly labeled.

"Kratom acts as an opioid agonist, similar to Tramadol, providing a mild opiate high," said Michael Hollis with Legacy Freedom Treatment Centers in Charlotte. "The high consists of a small burst of energy with mild euphoric, warming effects. It is often used for its pain relief and anxiolytic properties."

OK, then.
